How do you know that people who commit suicide aren't happy that they did so? Did anyone ask them?

True. It could be a way of raising the happiness level.

Yeah. Find a nice support group, make some friends, and be happy again.

Is their happiness due to moral values and libations by any coincidence ?

"The report ranks countries on six key variables that support well-being: income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity."

    Not directly.

That's the way. The only problem with alcohol is, when You can't decide what to drink..

My buddy Al the engineer moved from outside Helsinki Finland to northern Denmark 2 years ago. He had lived in Finland for almost 20 years.

Not his experience. The "happy" part.

My favorite story of his from about 2 mos after his move :

The second day he rode the bus in his Danish new town the bus driver stopped him as he was getting on.

    Why ?

To tell him a joke. Al said it was funny - I'll take his word.

Why does this stick out ?

Al said that for 13 straight years he rode the same bus in Finland and the bus driver would glare at him - every single day.

Anecdotal ? Sure, but Al told it to me as a way of answering how he was liking Denmark compared to Finland.

His mom was born in Finland/dad was born in Sweden.

She had a Scandinavian gift shop in the town in Michigan where Al and I met.

I always remember this one paperback book in her shop that showed a scowling old woman on the cover and when you opened it up, all the pages were blank.

The title ? "The Finnish Joke Book and Other Myths"...

    A couple of Finnish expressions:
" Finnish summer is short, but fortunately it doesn't snow so much."
" Alcohol makes me feel good and things seem to start working out" (<- a legendary movie quote)
" Fun without alcohol is just pretended"

Maybe what those factors measure could better be called "well-being".

But lots of other kinds of trees. That seems to help me.

I've been riding buses a lot recently. Most drivers give some sort of a greeting now. There's one driver on the line that goes past my home who is actually talkative - for a Finnish bus driver anyway...

An American, a Frenchman and a Finn saw an elephant for the first time. The American thought: "How could I make money out of it". The Frenchman thought: "I wonder how its love life is". The Finn ... he thought: "I wonder what it thinks about me".
