I tell this story to friends now, just because enough time has passed and I think it's too funny not to share.

Freshman year of college girlfriend. She's crazy but beautiful, so my 17 year old self could gloss over quite a few warning signs.

However, one that blew my mind was when she walked into my dorm room while I was listening to Bob Marley.

She says "Ugh. I HATE Bob Marley."

I don't listen to him much anymore, but I don't really understand how anyone could HATE him. Maybe it's not your thing, but it isn't offensive or anything. That's a pretty strong stance.

    I ask her "...why?"

    Her response?

    "He ruined that Clapton song."

    ......just.......wow.......

"Tori Amos is my favorite singer."

The crazy is almost 100% guaranteed.

So how long did y'all date after that?

I once dated a really cute gal who was also a big Pearl Jam fan. I was not.
This was the mid '90's I guess.
It was when Kurt Cobain killed himself. She said "It's really sad about Kurt Cobain, but when Eddie Vedder dies I will have to take a personal day of mourning".
That struck me as really odd. I started to lose interest and we didn't last much longer.

A woman I'd been seeing told me about this great new song she'd heard on the soft rock/smooth jazz radio station. It was really good, she mentioned.

A day or two later, we were in her car when it came on the radio. "That's it, that's the song I was
telling you about the other day!"

The song was "Georgia On My Mind", sung by Michael Bolton.

High School days, I was into Zappa, Rush, Meat Puppets, Butthole Surfers (still am). She was into Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and the like.
Too bad, as we had pretty outrageous chemistry otherwise.

For some reason, I always had issues with girls who had up John Lennon posters. Never could make that connection.

I was talking to a girl and she asked what music did I like, I started by saying I like Tom Petty.
She said how come you like him he's never in the charts. FFS

For me it's not a musical thing, it's Monty Python. She has to like Monty Python. If she doesn't, I just don't see it going anywhere. I'd only irritate her.

We're out, the jukebox plays "Jumping Jack Flash"
She says "I love Johnny Cash, the man in red"
I turn my head and pretend not to hear what she said

Fountains of Wayne: "I'll Do The Driving"

It's amazing what we will ignore in the name of . . um . . love.

When the Music doesn't connect, neither does much of anything else.
    Except breaking-up.

Whe. The music didn't work between us, neither did their relationship with my best and most trusted Friends. THAT was the real deal-breaker for me. Every time.

Who cares what music they like .If they are sweet and you get on with them its irrelevant .In a few years you will probably have far more to occupy both you times.Of course her having a cute little butt, legs to die for , and long blond hair may have helped

A girl I was dating for a short while told me she was the "Ann Wilson of Yuba City".

I always preferred Nancy. We didn't last another week.

I went to a Pearl Jam show with an ex over a decade ago. About halfway through she sat down.

28 years ago somehow managed to bridge this gap: Her; Bon Jovi, Poison, hair metal. Me; Everything BUT 80's Hair Bands. Still married, still don't really connect musically, although music is really not her thing anyway. And she really doesn't dig my new alt-country band,
